Shiny new... um... oldness.
Nov. 19th, 2005 12:43 amI was merrily tidying away the stuff on my desk in the last hour today (tidying since I'll be doing the disposition thing on Monday) when one of the PAs comes down from an office somewhere, saying that she's been given a couple of books to donate to the library. She handed them over. Two roughly-thousand-page black leatherbound volumes.
The Cyclopedia of Western Australia (illustrated) in two volumes : an historical and commercial review, descriptive and biographical facts figures and illustrations : an epitome of progress edited by J.S. Battye (for whom the State's Library of WA History is named, for he was the State Librarian of the time).
And these weren't the 1985 reprints, these were the originals from 1912-13. Beautiful books, in pretty good condition (some pages had been repaired, by someone who'd been taught book repair means more than just stickytape). If someone wanted information on the first 80 years of the colony, then this would be a great start. Plus the old pics of Perth and all. If we don't keep them we'll send them on to the Battye Library, there can't be many copies of the original left. And try not to mention my initial reaction of "oooooooohhhh..."
