Look, Dad!
What is it, son?
They're starting again!

I woke up this morning to the news that Brendan Nelson (Federal Minister for Education, Science and Training) (yes, our education minister is called "Nelson"... figures...) has taken time out from his usual cries for more info on how everyone is performing against everyone else so The West Australian could bring us this headline:

Nelson OKs Intelligent Design (p. 9, also letters)

The Intelligent Design Movement (I forgot to get the rep's name from the letters page) says that they're not asking for outright creationism to be taught instead of evolution, or for ID itself to be taught in science classrooms, just that the controversy and different viewpoints exist (could be quite interesting, like an article in an old Analog about how something like the eye shouldn't be an evolved thing). But, weary cynic that I am, wonder how long this state of affairs will last, before it's decided that the mere presense of evolution in the schools is an abomination to no longer be tolerated...

The Australian reports in a story on page 7 that Canberra is joining into the chorus of "Global warming does not exist" since it's suddenly become inconvenient in court for the big-L Liberal Party's mates. Funny how two weeks can change a government-commissioned climate outlook report... (although I'm sure the pollies have a succinct one-finger answer for anyone questioning - as just illustrated on the late news as I write this).

And on the social side of the news, Tuesday's West had an article looking for the most charming and charismatic suburbs in Perth. Coming in tops for the lads were those living in Como.

I went to Como High. Charisma is a quality of the area?! Which alternate universe did I land in? I know people change after school, but not that much, surely!

And that's the good news! *hidden cannons burst newspaper-confetti all over the stage*

o/" It's Good News Week!
Someone's dropped a bomb somewhere
Contaminating atmosphere
And blackening the sky...

It's good news week!
Someone's found a way to give
The rotting dead a will to live
No one need ever die... o/"
