When I visited the comic store last week, had a little windfall of 80s goodness, in the form of a dozen Teen Titans comics from the early 80s (more than I expected, I just expected the 5 that were in the display, but when I checked the boxes, lo and behold…). So, I’ve made a few notes on what I’ve read so far in between various researches and dvd marathons (yay MacGyver versus mini-Daleks!)…

The New Teen Titans, Number 17, March 1982
“The Possession of Francis Kane”

An old friend of Wally’s is possessed, and her mother is a complete ***** and keeps insisting the only thing to do is kill the girl.

Vic calls Dick “Short Pants”! (now, if your scans_daily training has kicked in…)

Fran knew that Wally was Kid Flash all along.

According to the doctor “She is highly anemic. Brainscan indicates a higher than normal magnetic reading in her brain.” I didn’t know anemia caused powers…

Silver Age Batman Ad!

Donna is very very strong – like Rachel Grey and her telekinesis should be.

Poor Dino-Gar, having a cruise ship thrown at him.

Vic stops the disaster with reversed-magnetism. The real culprit? Doctor Polaris trying to escape from his prison dimension. And Fran’s mother still wants her killed, then throws her out of her home.

The New Teen Titans, Number 18, April 1982
“A Pretty Girl is Like a Maladi”

The return of the original Starfire, a Russian superhero named Leonid Kovar, who got his powers at Tunguska… just as well he never read the X-Files comic. He’s been sent to track down a Russian contact in America who’s been infected with a radioactive contagion by a mad official.

Meanwhile, Wally’s checking for Reds Under The Beds.

Robin has an all-yellow bike to match his cape.

ZING! Kovar takes on and puts Wally in his place over judging all Russians or all Americans by their government. This is followed with a handy uppercut when Wally doesn’t take this lying down.

Wally pays him back with a handy stone column, while getting more and more hate-filled towards Russians with every page; especially once Kovar finds the girl, Maladi, and the whole team has to pitch in to stop him killing her.

Maladi and Leonid were to be married the day she died of the contagion – Leonid was trying to spare her the pain of the radiation sickness, while Wally was making out he was a stone cold killer until the moment the secret is revealed.

The New Teen Titans, Number 20, June 1982
“Dear Mom and Dad”

Wally writes “So many things are changing, aren’t they? But change always seems to upset me just a little” – Wally is Garth! “We fear change.”

Hanging out with Batman isn’t good for Dick’s self-esteem – “feel like I’m a stupid kid repeating 5th grade for the 3rd time”.

It’s Victor’s 19th birthday, and it’s time for a surprise party – and egads! Starfire’s actually wearing normal clothes! Donna’s saddened by the thought of birthdays (this story happening before “Who Is Donna Troy?”.

Wally’s followed the bad guy “Disruptor” and his pop, who spills what HIVE is all about; followed by a trip home after the emergency is over – having superspeed and being able to run quicker than the post is more personal than a letter.

This issue includes a mini-tale where Marv Wolfman and George Perez meet the Titans after being kidnapped by a mad scientist – but nobody’s taking the blame for that tale! And the Titans plots all come from Marv’s dreams…

The New Teen Titans, Number 29, March 1983
“First Blood”

Ahhh, competing Brotherhoods of Evil Mutants Doers with ridiculous accents.

Ok, the various Robin groups would love these workout pics! Where’s the similar pics of Batgirl? ;)

Dick’s driving himself crazy trying to cram four lives into onel Donna’s driving herself crazy by brooding every time families are mentioned; poor Wally’s still trying for Raven and admitting his feelings to her, all leading to foreshadows of Who Is Donna Troy and Dark Phoenix Raven on the same page. “If you stay, I swear I shall be the death of you!” And Homer Simpson thought he’d heard all the great rejection lines…

Donna’s starting to breach the fourth wall on the soap opera of their lives.

Kory to a visiting Roy, regarding Dick: “Why has he become so moody?” (hi Kory, have you met Robin’s mentor?....”) Only Dick chooses this moment to return, and how! If Titans had eyebeams, Roy would be a charcoal smear on the floor. I don’t think I’ve even seen one of the Big Three so angry, and this is after seeing Wonder Woman descending on Kon-El in the current TT annual…

*snork* at Terra’s costume – “Galactus called, he wants his hat back!” – at this point she doesn’t want to be a Titan (yet).

Oh, here’s Francis Kane, with her powers back… and they’ve twigged that in girls the name is usually “Frances”.

Oooh, Kory likes kids, and Dick sidesteps the question (he’s just the same then as now *thwaps OYL Dick*) and the guy they’ve come to see talks like Gordon Gecko’s prototype (although he’s actually an attorney).

And now we have mind control! Raven thinks Trigon killed Wally, and now she attacks the “Trigon” she sees, only it’s actually Wally there. Her soul-self swallows Wally, and within the soul-self Wally “sees” Raven for the first time, and hates what he finds, driving Raven away when the illusion’s broken…

The New Teen Titans, Number 30, April 1983
“Nightmare”

Fran and Roy try to stick up for Raven and her horror over possibly hurting Wally, but they may as well have told him she’s Russian.

Terra models her new outfit – Gar’s reaction: *drool*

Ouch – Vic’s just taken a pressie to a friend who could’ve been more… only to be greeted by her fiancée. And now he’s chewing himself out.

The New Years sign in Times Square didn’t light. The cause? Raven passing through it.

Phobia uses her powers on the New Years crowd to make them hurt the muties Titans. That’s original.

When push comes to shove, Wally still loves Raven, after she’s taken prisoner when he’s tried to save her.

And the last panels show Donna on a New Years date with Terry – who has a ring…

The New Teen Titans, Number 31, May 1983
“Inferno”

Still in Times Square, and even without Phobia’s influence the crowd’s still in “superteam equals dirty stinkin’ muties!” mindspace.

Wally’s back to being freaked… and Speedy (Roy) is in the way…

Donna spills about the proposal – I’m surprised Kory didn’t squish her by hugging her so tightly – and at the moment I’m more inclined to think it was Kid Flash who was trained by Batman.

One of Raven’s worst fears – millions of souls tearing at her again and again and again, until it’s changed to show the Titans dead and Trigon in league with the Brotherhood, and how much Wally’s words after the attack have hit close to home. End result – they convince her to help roust Brother Blood.

Whoops – the Titans show up to save Raven, only to be defeated by the Brain in front of her. Her nightmare come true, and she has only one course of action left – Dark Phoenix!

Trigon tries to get a toehold in Raven, but Donna returns from where she was ported warped to in time to get Raven back from the brink of killing.
