The most recent episode of The Amazing Race to air down here saw the remaining racers fly from Oman to Perth! So, I thought I'd keep track of where they went and put in a few notes...

The beginning of the show, wherein the audience are being told what this weeks destination is, and we're shown in quick (almost scene-break-on-Angel quick) succession: Kangaroo statues at Council House/Stirling Gardens (that's on St Georges Terrace, just one block from the CBD), Swan Belltower (some of you might remember it from a post I made about Batman Begins last June), the Barracks Arch (all that's left of the old Barracks, and at the head of St Georges Terrace), and a quick pan from the War Memorial over Perth, the Narrows Bridge, and South Perth.

Ahh, the clue's at the War Memorial. "Do you know King's Park?" one cabbie is asked. *giggle*

Freeway shots (although not from an angle that'd be from the Airport).

Heh, the lorikeets made it into the tape (although not quite steal the show) :D *squark!*

And now they're going by taxi from the International Airport to King's Park to Fremantle? Wish I was collecting those fares... :D (and Perth's Airport is one of the closest international airports to its home city in the world)

Fremantle Port - the control building is the tallest building allowed in the Port. Pity they didn't show more than just the commercial port itself so far.

Perth - outside the main train station at night, looking under the main flyover between the station to Myer (our biggest department store) and Forrest Chase (what they call the pedestrian mall/meeting place, and the shops along that side of the Myer building on both levels). It looks so EMPTY! No people, no cars. Usually it's teeming! The Train Station building itself is over 100 years old.

Rottnest - no private cars allowed on the island, bike hire is the most popular way around. They're making them ride tandem bikes?

Hey, I remember that road between the salt lakes, and that's 1990 I was there (twice - once on camp, once as holiday - wish I could've afforded it that time my best friends went).

Ahh, their clue was at the main lighthouse, in the middle of the island on Wadgemup Hill. You can see the lighthouse building from the train on the mainland - look out to sea between Cottesloe and North Fremantle stations.

Fremantle Prison - really hard to find ;) They didn't mention the prison itself is now a major tourism attraction.

BJ and Tyler are taxiing from Hillarys to Fremantle now? ker-CHING! (Hillarys is a good 25km north as the crow flies) Big Norfolk Island pines? Ok, could be anwhere, but looks like a good sign for Freo (just not the Prison)

OWWW!! Fran and Barry were right outside the Town Hall looking for the taxis, right at the corner with the High Street Mall (ie, where the older of the Fremantle Elizabeths bookstores is, plus only about 10 metres from the Freo Dymocks and Angus & Robertson bookstores. They were looking for a taxi to the prison, but they're only about seven-ten minutes walk away from the gate, if that! Yeah, they don't know that, but to be so close....

I wonder if the building with the tunnel entrance is the same one that housed the gallows? (the tunnels weren't open to the public yet last time I went).

Pity they didn't show Moondyne Joe's cell while everyone was searching cells... that one's tiny (the cells as they are now are twice as big as when they were built, being expanded after his time), and the walls are lined with studded railway sleepers. Moondyne Joe was WA's most famous bushranger.

How did they find the broadest accents in the city?

Nice little aerial shot of Freo...

Fremantle Sailing Club - we tend to say "Western Australia" more than just "Australia" if giving where we're from - ie, "Perth, Western Australia".

Fran and Barry had to walk back almost as far as they'd come to find a taxi - unless Dick Smiths have moved in the last few years. Once again, near the Town Hall Square, but different side now.

And that's the end of the episode.

I must have missed that one--or I just thought they were regular birds.

My first thought was they cleared the place out because they were filming. But that wouldn't be right, since they normally run into tons of people. Must have been a slow day is all I can come up with.

Pity they didn't show Moondyne Joe's cell...

Sounds interesting. Is it sort of like Alcatraz?
