Superman Returns
Jul. 9th, 2006 12:55 amSo Friday was the big trip to the moving pictures.
njamos and I went out to the early morning session of Superman Returns.
We got in a good while before the ads started, and talked. Then the ads started, and talk turned to making up silly reasons and voices for the ads. See what happens if I'm allowed an audience? ;) Trailers this time around were for: Miami Vice; Talladega Nights; You, Me and Dupree; and Lady in the Water.
Lex comparing himself to Prometheus: I just want to bring fire to the people. Just like his comic counterpart is doing in the pages of 52 with his plan to turn everyone into metas. *must not reveal his secret meetings with Wanda Maximoff*
"Loads more mutants!"
Lois' Pulitzer-winning article being "Why the world doesn't need Superman" - ouch.
Although, not so terribly out of character for Supes himself. I'm thinking of his appearance in the pages of Nightwing at the time of the Gotham earthquake/quarantine, and his constantly coming up against the expectation that he'll do everything, no mere mortal need do anything with Supes in town. Much with the telling looks when even Dick starts talking like this.
Plus could this argument be also used for the Superman of the Justice League animated series. If he were to do it all for them, wouldn't it be just that much shorter a step to declaring sentence on his own and going down the path of the Justice Lords?
The scene where Clark throws the ball for his dog - way over the horizon. Would this mean that he's been away so long that he no longer has to reign himself in around the fragile squishy humans.
Lex's little friend is called Kitty. Can she also walk through walls? No. Well, Lex, you get the sidekicks you pay for... *runs off with the Marvel Kitty*
Heh. Bo the bartender still has the Olsen bow tie - and notice who Jimmy's hugging when the plane is saved. (Jack Larson played Jimmy in the 50s tv series Adventures of Superman)
During the first power outage, thanks to descriptions of what's coming up in Smallville, I was kinda expecting the message "Kneel before Zod" to appear on the screens (ok, I haven't seen the first two movies).
Lex's model railway - Gomez Addams would be proud of what he did (Fester would've been handy in that scene too).
Superman in Space, watching the Earthand breathing in space a la Batman, I swear this scene was painted two or three years ago by Alex Ross.
Glad that Supes wasn't the only one doing the rescuing, but did the Lanes (ok, the Whites) *have* to be on the bit of the boat that broke off? Although in all this it seems that Lois is going for the Daniel Jackson Award for Injuries Dustained In-story.
Waidaminit... since this kid is "meant to be" Cyclops's son, does that make him Cable? :D What, he's a different character in here? Oops ;) (just wait a few years for a new friend to be brought home - Wade Wilson!)
Ok, that was a hard landing... could it be that Superman is a tad miffed?
When the three guys were beating up Clark, that would've been a good time for Emoboy Prime to show.
Lex is getting in touch with his inner Jason Todd...
*cut to: Lex spending hours making his Kryptonite-knife all wavy like Jason's*
Would Tok'Ra technology for building and demolishing their tunnels be able to beat the Kryptonian versions?
The coma could've been a good time to get Batman into a small part of the movie. He could've gone up to Metropolis to see Superman's condition for himself.
We see a nurse standing over Superman's bed, when a voice asks about his condition, and when the nurse turns around, we see the black cape, and the cowl... he is there.
How did the Daily Planet get it's landmark globe back on top of the building so fast (you see it briefly in the final flyby - somehow I don't think there'll be two skyscrapers in Metropolis with the same landmark.
Overall, really enjoyed this movie - was too busy being caught up in everything to really take many notes.
Afterwards we had planned on getting a late lunch (yes, I consider 1pm as late for lunch :P), but anywhere we looked for cheap simple lunch was too crowded or too closed (our normal before-or-after movie places being long-since closed) not that we really *needed* lunch anyway - large popcorn is a little too large, we only managed somewhere between a quarter and a third of the box between us. So, we went home. Well, I went to the shops first to pick up my computer I'd dropped off in the morning to have the power supply replaced. I hadn't realised the other one was so noisy even in normal mode!
About the only other noteworthy thing happening during the week was a lunch on Tuesday, for a workmate who by now is over in Greece and Cyprus until year's end - bit of change from the routine and chance for a nice bit of steak (they've cut down on the "jus" but still need to do the same for the salad dressing). The artificial streams along the old Claise Brook have been closed down for "winter" *pokes clouds for this rain stuff that's meant to appear in winter*. The small lake that's part of these is also draining, the first metre or so around the edges is just mud, but at least the ducks are happy to go nosing around in it.
So, that's about it, stuff continues much as usual; waved coworkers off, gained new computer parts (and external hard drive for backups, much quicker than burning cds), did the meet-up and movie thing for the first time in years, and once more into one of my uncommunicative moods (even for me) where I pretty much can't think of anything to say. Perfectly normal week.
