A slice of the week
Dec. 18th, 2004 10:42 pmAAAnndd here I am, in ye olde Beverley Telecentre (ie, combination of netcafe and general community info centre for people the helping of...)
Dad's dinner is done. Or rather, is still in progress. Well, not the dinner dinner part (although there might be people going back for thirds and whatnot) but the socialising part is still going strong (at least, when I wrote that bit).
"So why aren't I there?", I hear you asking (you haven't been paying attention, have you? ;)) As some of you might be aware, I am the least sociable person I know (did I write that in the AL checkin thread yesterday, or did I just mean to?) So, imagine some thirty other people, most of whom I don't know, all in the same room. As you might've guessed, I ate and ran. Dad seems happy, circulating himself around the joint (in fact, it was his idea that I come here, back when we were setting this thing up). Plus he's got reason to be happy... at least 9 bottles of scotch (including at least 3 of his favourite Glenfiddich) with a further case of scotch-and-coke, and a whole bunch of scratchies (and a badge with 60 on it ^_^ ;)) I'll be in here a couple of hours, and then hightail it back to my parents place, for sleep and then pickup in the morning.
What had gone before?
Well, today started differently to other days - I got up before lunchtime ;) I decided to catch a slightly earlier bus than I'd chosen the night before - I needed to get up to Midland to be picked up by my aunts, and since this meant a car, I wanted some time to do some shopping there as well. A bus and a train trip later (and were Perth's malls and arcades packed!) and I'm at Midland Gate shopping centre (rather large one, which being in Midland means it's the first decent sized one country people come to when coming in from the Wheatbelt) with a little over two hours. Two hours of wandering, giftbuying, me-buying, and one muffin and frozen orange later (I was really thirsty by then) and my aunts show up precisely 4.30 as arranged.
The trip to Beverley was all right - been a while since I saw all the country around... and sorry to disappoint, but no roos were spotted ;) (when I lived up here, I saw only one roo in the two years I was travelling these roads). Did see some larger flocks of parrots than we see in the city, and flocks of galahs and corellas too, especially around York and Beverley towns themselves - makes sense, larger probability of spilled grain on the surrounding roads, plus rivers et al. And my gosh they are *loud*, especially the corellas!
My parents live in a different house now from the one I left all those years ago... quite nice, if somewhat overdoing the levels (probably from more and more additions during the years - you really notice that around here... the first house we lived in in this town the additions were obvious and many) - lots of little rooms, but that with the combination of the dark furnishings make it all just seem cozy, kinda like an old study. :) It's almost scary though, the way the town has made itself... The house of my parents is pretty much right behind the line of shops on the main street, and along the railway line. However, this street doesn't come off the main street itself (a series of turns away) and is actually on a dirt road, even though the main street is literally throwing distance. Right next door is a little abandoned building. Turns out it used to be a small convenience store - back in the day, it serviced all the people in the railyards a little further down.
Anyways, it's quite a bit closer to town than the last house (way out on the approach road from York - Beverley is a long town...) in fact, I can see the hotel where the dinner is from it  I bet dad's most happy about that ;)
Talking of the dinner, was rather good, plenty of food to go around, being of the lasagne, chicken, (very mild) curry with salads, mash, rice and bread variety. Rather stuffed from my two servings, and there was still half the lasagne left. Which catches me up to here, in the telecentre, trying to get used to the equipment here (whoda thought they could still get mice without a scrollwheel?) There's a shinynew computer (oooh shiny) in here, but it doesn't have a program I need, so I'm on this one, merrily changing the settings to suit me ;).
Luckily, no one decided to be a shutterbug tonight *phew*. For those unfamiliar with my stance on cameras at the moment, here's a little something I said yesterday (thanks for getting it for me, Anna!)
Phew, what a day... I remembered why I don't do social stuff. The morning tea? Waaay to crowded. I grabbed a plate, and then scarpered. I just can't handle standing around so many people. Guess I don't know how to have fun ;)
And later, Bossman sends out the link for the photos from the lunch and morning tea.  I'm so glad I scarpered from the morning tea; and I'll have to arrange accidents for the camera and the picture takers who insisted on getting everyone... *performs exorcism on server*
I'm not exactly fond of cameras at the moment. I look like a dork in their eyes (just like the past; mein gott mum, those pictures of me are twenty years out of date now... time to take them down...)
Far more appreciative of the chance to appear on film would've been the sleeping duck near the underpass yesterday (it was sitting there when I went by in the morning, and still there in the afternoon), and the big ringneck parrot that flew into the tree right beside me, really close and all... woulda made a good pic. :)
So, that's the dinner done, Christmas pressies exchanged, and supplied for next weekend (well, the stuff that doesn't need to be refrigerated) sorted. All that's left is to go through the week...
Although, I saw yesterday in the paper that a Swedish princess will be coming out here sometime in the near future... *considers FL* So... anyone need a lift from the airport?
