I saw the news today...
Apr. 30th, 2005 12:34 am...oh boy...
It was like looking out into a time portal, for once more it was 1996, and Li'l Johnnie had just come into office again. He's up to his old tricks... demonisation! And his favourite targets too... anyone on unemployment or low-income support. His first targets in the day, and now, front page banner headline of today's Australian.
Back then, it was "dob in a dole bludger". Today it's "Tougher Dole for "Shirkers". Please note, "shirker" means "anyone who's been within 5km of a Centrelink office in the past year"... oh crap, I had to go shopping in Cannington over Easter. FUCK. Exactly the same as nine years ago, everyone on *insert period-specific name of payment here* is milking the system, raking in the millions while surfing all day and partying all night on the taxpayer's dollar according to them. No, nobody is ever actually trying to find a job while jumping through more and more of their ever-increasing, ever-accusatory hoops. Surfing for all!
Snapping from anger to just tired now...

Are You A Republican?
At Easter I wrote an entry about a story concerning two kids books having some of the Federal cabinet thundering about painting them as brainwashing for mentioning two mummies or two daddies. That was the state newspapers. This story's now made it into the national stage. The Australian ran a story partially about this, partially about the rise of the Right here - pretty much the same ground as covered in the new book God Under Howard and in previous articles. Praise the Lord and Pass the Legislation appeared over a good expanse of paper on Tuesday.
I also mentioned a while back those ads for all those mobile ringtone and wallpaper clubs. Apart from making me feel old ;) they're also "shockingly" expensive. *gasp... yeah, we all saw that coming. The front page headline of today's West Australian (no link since they don't put many stories online): "Outcry over huge bills for ringtones", and stories about people racking up bills of $7000 in a month on their mobiles for chat clubs et al. And my dad was shocked when I spent $18 on joke lines back in the very early 90s. ;)
Was busy but feeling rather accomplished today. Nothing more out of the ordinary than a couple of rush requests, but being able to just request supply-by-email now we can do it too just makes things so much quicker, now we know we can get things out quicker to the intensely curious and information needing. Just a kind of energy taking over for getting everything done (after being half-asleep ;)). Of course, this energy decided to suddenly leave about halfway to the comic store *walk walk walk argh sag thud snore* Still, quick trip's a good trip, didn't need to wander the back-issue bins, everything I wanted for this week was new apart from "The Nail" trade paperback (although it might have been newly re-ordered.) After reading the last Phoenix Endsong on the way home (when not distracted by dolphins), I just had to make a new icon (and maybe a couple more later).
Ok, I'll be more coherent tomorrow... sleep good now.

6% Republican. | "You're a complete liberal, utterly without a trace of Republicanism. Your strength is as the strength of ten because your heart is pure. (You hope.)" |
