By popular demand ;), the tale of Secret Santa in primary school.

*flashback effects a la Wayne's World* The year is... um... sometime in the late 80s. We could imitate the PM just by going aaaaahhhhh, two-dollar coins were a pain to get used to with their same-size-as-a-five-cent-piece smallness, and I was the only person in existance not getting into Ninja Turtles. Yes, I was strange even then.

As is normal for December, things were winding down for the end of the year (our school years follow the calendar year). As is normal for primary school, the classes were awash with kids swapping Christmas cards. In the midst of this it was decided that we'd do a secret santa thing in our class. Names were drawn out of a hat, yada yada yah.

I go out and do the actual thinking of a gift to get thing. I don't know my giftee that well, so I go with a couple of neat little games that come in under the cost limit. I wouldn't have minded them myself, really. Then the giving day comes around. My gift? 50c worth of redskins lollies. *what the?* I go out and get something interesting I wouldn't normally buy, and I get something available in any corner deli or newsagent. There's putting thought and effort in! *burned*

*melodramatic hand-to-forehead pose* So, there's the dramatic tale of the incident that's jaded me towards the whole Secret Santa deal... or so I tell everyone. ;)

Really? I'm just no good at buying presents without a list "I'd like...". And I know I'm hard to buy for - by the time I realise I'd like something, I'm counting the change from buying it (or realising "not in this country bub"). This is if I even realise this is happening. In 2001 they were taking names for that year's thing, and asking if I wanted to be in the "krsscringul". "A what?" "KRsscrinGUL - like last year." *blank look* "Last year?" I had absolutely no memory of there even being a "Kris
Kringle" the previous year. Communications have improved greatly since then.

Ah well, I'll just go back to my cult. Don't know if I ever mentioned it, but a couple of years ago the records-jockey in the desk in front(ish) of mine told me that someone in the back thought I was in a cult since I never had lunch with anyone or went into morning teas etc... [All glory to Hathor!]

Anyhow, have had the last two days off [Bueller? Bueller?], using up some time before year's end. Took a little trip out to Carousel since my local bookstore is small and I've also not found what I wanted at the city ones. Surprisingly for Carousel it wasn't crouded beyond normal, even at midday. Had some luck, Dymocks had the Engines of Destiny their city store no longer had, and also Tales from the Captain's Table (which I had no idea was coming out here at all[/cynicism] anytime soon). Also the K-Mart had a copy of Peacekeeper War (thank you person who put it facing out on, well, technically the wrong shelf, but they were all like that) which I'd pretty much forgotten about after writing it off as "not gonna find it on this side of the country"; and a copy of Nineteen Eighty-Four which I'd planned on getting.

Well, back to work tomorrow. Since the kiosk is closed until after new years, that means I have to wander beyond building walls to the lunch places around. Including the make-your-own-roll place. What culinary experiments shall be tomorrow's lunch? Already gone the chicken-swiss cheese-curried egg route this week...

You're bad gift sounds a little like what someone gave me in elementary school one year. It was a jar of what looked like jelly beans for around $0.99.

I didn't care for candy or anything sweet, so I remember that I gave it to someone else.

Right after thanking the person that gave it to me.
