Dad's time in the Lowland Gunners
Dec. 21st, 2005 11:24 pmSo last night
calliopes_pen and I were talking and the subject of where our Dads had gone in their Army days came up. Since they'd both been in Germany, but not entirely sure when, I thought I'd go to the source, and ask Dad. And this is what he said.
Regiment: 40th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery
Battery: 129 (Dragon) Battery
Enlisted in 1963, and trained at a place on the border between England and Wales.
June 1963-June 1965: Stationed in Munster, Germany, although in this time travelling all over Europe: France, The Netherlands, Denmark...
June 1965 - returned to England briefly before flying out to Malaya/Singapore in August, and from there on to Borneo. He was in hospital there for appedicitis on his 21st birthday (40 years ago today), had to be pulled out of the field and everything.
From sometime in 1966 to 1969 he was stationed in England, but once again globetrotting on exercises - The US, Canada, Greece, Malta... Also his regiment was in the Sahara, leaving Libya just before Colonel Qaddafi came to power in 1969.
1969 - transferred to the Woolwich-Arsenal Barracks, the "Training Barracks" as they were known. (Dad would later also conduct training for the Australian Army Reserve once he got out here in the mid 70s through to the mid 80s).
Demobbed in 1972, not wanting to get involved with the next tour into Northern Ireland.
Dad said that after all this time, there's more countries he's been to but it's hard to remember exactly how many. Pretty much everywhere non-Communist to make things easier.
