It's No News Week...
Apr. 15th, 2006 12:38 amSo, to regale all with great tales of coolness about the past week!
*crickets chirp*
Oh! The lawn has been successfully mown. Let the growing commence!
Yes, quiet week coupled with blogger's block, spent getting some paused tasks completed, more training, and wondering how I can get away with going on two week's holiday by emailling boss when I've already started.
Oh, and dolphins. Of the kind who have one possibly surfacing on the far bank of a river, then suddenly have a trio pop up right next to the bridge. And bunnies, once again guest starring at the local shops.
I'm told a couple of weeks ago when the great leader *rolleyes* was in Perth, he visited the new ABC Centre across the street from work - people saying about the security and all around there. Now, this strikes me as fairly odd, since this PM and cronies have always been criticising the ABC so I'm thinking his visit may have gone something like this: "Nyeh eh... you lot don't do a very good job! You're all biased against me! :emo tear: *mutter* I'll show you all by cutting your funding again, you buncha hippies!"
Interesting - the refit of the old St John Ambulance building in Wellington Street is finished - it's now a Youth Hostel - I sometimes walk past here (depending on mood), and saw them refitting/extending the building, until a couple of weeks ago I passed on the bus, and there it was, big banners and signs in amongst the old St John's signs declaring them open. I must say they couldn't have asked for a better location (unless they wanted to take over the old Greater Union cinema) - they're not kidding when they say the train station's two minutes away on foot - the city centre's just a block across and a block down. About as great a location as the Oxford Circus Youth Hostel where we stayed in London (well, the equivalent, unfortunately I can't just walk into the Perth YH and walk out onto Oxford Street...)
I found out what the still-preserved facade (or rather, portico) at the new Law Courts building was called - in a street directory all of four years old it's called the St. George Hall Theatre Memorial - now that I have that I find that it was the first theatre in Perth, its first performance being held on December 4th 1879. So that's one little mystery solved (at least, solved before the construction is completed).

One you are tagged you MUST write a blog entry about your 6 weird habits/things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose the next six people to be tagged and list their names.
1) When walking in the library, I tend to swing around on the shelf-ends, Beast-style.
2) I point at the phones when they ring, just in case I have phone-smashing powers that've just decided to kick in.
2a) I don't have a mobile phone either, which is weird enough in this day and age ;)
3) When I leave the house I have to switch my blinds around so nothing can be seen, even if they leave the path and stand in the gravel.
4) I hum the music from certain scenes in the Back To The Future movies when I'm walking in cloudy/stormy weather. Ok, even fine weather, if I'm late I start thinking of the tunnel scene in BTTF2 if I'm rushing for the bus...
5) I can't really do the whole compliment thing. Either the receiving (everything either strikes me as fake/overdone, or I'm all "eh? just doing what comes naturally"), or the giving, since I can't write anything without it seeming "they'll see through me in a second". I feel like I need a second person on my letters, so I can just write the facts, and they can make it fit for human eye - pity, since some of the letters of the past I've seen in the last couple of months have been interesting not just in what they say but how they say it (stay tuned).
6) I can procrastinate doing any LJ updating or answering/commenting for a week if I find I can't think of a non-crap way to write everything in.
I hereby tag the honourable:
Well, everyone I tagged will know it telepathically... NOW!

Date: 2006-04-15 03:54 am (UTC)That info about the St. George Hall Theatre is of interest to me - do you know why the theatre itself is no longer there? Old theatres are, IMHO, among the most beautiful buildings around.

Date: 2006-04-16 06:24 pm (UTC)I don't know off-hand about why they knocked it down - finding anything about it through searching has been a bit difficult, since our main street is St Georges Terrace, and Hay Street also has our current major theatre, His Majesty's, an Edwardian building opened in 1904: http://www.hismajestystheatre.com.au/about.asp
Two online images in the State Library's catalogue (thumbnails):
1904
1926
I read somewhere that some of the upper storey work in Hay Street (the right hand side in those photos) was lost in the 1950s - the balconies I think.
Anyway, I'm hoping to get to the State Library this week some time. I've found a citation for an article about the St George Hall, now it's just a matter of seeing if it says "why".
