The Photos
May. 8th, 2006 12:12 amAfter my post of great-uncle Jack's letter, I was asked if I had the pictures Jack mentioned. So, I asked Mum, and she sent down a few photos (including one of Jack), copies of the postcards, and a copy of one of great-great-uncle Maurice's letters he wrote briefly describing his trip home - he was leaving all the details until he saw his brother (my great-grandfather) a week or so after that
I also signed up with the ScotlandsPeople site, and managed to find my great-grandparents and their parents on Dad's side of the family! I was just lucky that Dad's father was old enough to be included in the births index, and that I could make out his mother's name - unfortunately the records were copied from microfiche, and the person back in 1904 could've certainly used some tips from Maurice on penmanship! Then I was able to backtrack from there for his parents' marriage entry, with each of their parents on there (once again, the microfiche thing strikes on my great-great-grandmother's maiden name though. Still, it's far more than I knew before!
Anyway, here are the four photos - I'll post the postcards later.

Date: 2006-05-20 05:51 pm (UTC)Aye, it's good that I've managed to find as much as I have - it's like being... connected I guess would be the word. I haven't really known that much about my family until now, so it's been an eye-opener to be finding stuff in some lines going back centuries, from me, my parents and aunts, to so many more people!
Now to find your great-uncle - his being in the military makes him a bit easier to find. My first stop was the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, given that you said he'd died in action; and voila! http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=2609457 Gunner Lawrence Miller, son of John and Kathleen, died in Italy in 1944.
If I didn't have the CWGC to look up, I'd try the nominal rolls at the National War Memorial, since they have the nominal rolls for both World Wars. Except, of course, Lawrence was a New Zealander and not Australian. So, to see if there's a similar roll for New Zealand. What I found was the Cenotaph collection from the Auckland Museum - and a photo! http://www.aucklandmuseum.com/databases/general/RecordDetail.aspx?datasetID=268&SearchID=234266&Ordinal=1
This direct link may have some trouble, so you might need to go in from http://www.aucklandmuseum.com/databases/general/default_public.aspx and search Cenotaph from there.
Actually, I wish I had some more info on the NZ side of things too - Maurice and his brothers (one of them being my great-grandfather - I now have one of the letters he sent to Claude) were born in New Zealand, and I've found a couple of isolated references to their father as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Militias, and mum says they were either warned or spared during Te Kooti's War.
Anyway, I haven't checked, but there might be some more in NZ's National Archives - this week I received copies of Grandpa's, Uncle Jack's and Uncle Maurice's files from the NAA, and know there's more for the asking, and I also found a file relating to Jack's death already scanned and fully online, so maybe the New Zealand Archives have similar access.
Anyway, I'm generally ok. A bit writers-blocked vis-a-vis LJ at the moment, you may have noticed. Busy, oh yeah, but what else is new. Going to see X-Men 3 when it comes out on Thursday - yeah, taking the day off for it ;). I'm too impatient to wait for weekends  Plus you know me, cinemas are best in the week, not the weekend! :D A little break from the 8-4 world (9-5 is starting and finishing too late...). Any plans to give yourself any breaks? :)

Date: 2006-05-21 04:52 am (UTC)Wow thanks for that, it was him, my mother confirmed it.
My days off are Friday and I don't know when my next holiday is coming up.
I want to see Pirates of the Caribbean 2 when it comes out. I refuse to see The Davinici Code, its all just a big hype to me. And I haven't read the book anyway.
I was thinking it was about time we should meet up but not this Friday because I already have plans...do you still keep in contact with Peta?

Date: 2006-05-21 03:10 pm (UTC)Anytime :) Actually I was pretty surprised to get a photo as well.
Ah, regular days off, must be nice. :) I'm using up one of my days in lieu to go see the film, since I don't have enough flexitime built up.
Still a few weeks until PotC2 comes out, I see - I had to tell a friend as soon as that news of came out, since she was squeeing so much about the first one, having visited one of the places they filmed in. Aye, Da Vinci Code was a bit too hyped up (and I'd be saying the same of *any* movie given the same hype). Know some people who loved the film and book, some who hated it.
Meeting up would be a good idea, yes. :) I've got the week of the 12th off, if some time during that week would be good for you. I haven't heard from Peta in years though.

Date: 2006-05-26 03:01 pm (UTC)If you arrive early I'll probably be up in Battye or trying to figure out the Family History Centre (in words I can spell). I can use the morning for researching by showing up early.
And I know, that little cafe by the cinemas is long gone (that arcade feels so deserted). Who knows what else has gone since our time?
