A few more randoms
Oct. 23rd, 2005 02:11 amI was thinking earlier in the week (scary, no?) just at some of the strangeness of the past. Like in primary school, and stuff like presenting assemblies, getting up in front of the whole school, making PA announcements and the like were coveted roles, and we competed for the honour. Considering how I turned out, it's strange how I ever believed this. We were still being encouraged to all be joiners (and extroverts), little individuality in that respect (sure, it's preparing us for dealing with people out in The World, but my hindsight is snarky). *thinks* Ah, that's right, I was thinking of this because I saw a picture in a paper with a teacher and group of students in a photo, all cheering and waving. No, I'm not thinking of the opening credits of Daria right now, why do you ask? ;)
Wow, I just saw a note a system we use (ok, so it was Thursday, but I haven't updated since then) "Due to-day" - I didn't know anyone still hyphenated words like to-day. I haven't seen it outside the pages of older books (or books taking the mick out of same, a la a part of a "proper and correct" book for all the Little Lord Faulteroys and Fothering-Thomases in Molesworth, which was written closer to that time anyways).
Oh yeah, I'm too far gone on the path to Comic Book Guydom. Friday's West had a headline "Rayner faces new police scrutiny" on page 4. The Rayner in question is a Moira Rayner, Lawyer. My immediate thought at that headline? Kyle Rayner, Green Lantern.
I wonder what it was like in the old days when the Dep... I mean, Ministry (at the time) had an actual shop for people looking to buy stuff the Ministry published. So other people wouldn't put calls through to us as if we were a bookstore and had many copies of everything anyone in the Department has ever written just lying around to give out. "Good morning, Department of Angus and Robertson - Mossenson's thesis from 1957? Sure, I'll just gift-wrap it for you too!" In between my teaching/tech support gigs of course - honestly, after Friday and helping co-workers computerwise while showing our work-experiencer new stuff, I'm tempted to add "Teacher" to my sig block. The funny thing is, a fair amount of the time I'm being asked about features of Outlook or Excel that I don't even use! I'm forever just trying random menus, or right-clicking things in case it works (and it did!)
I got the Batman Begins DVD, watched it today (yay!) - this little thing caught my imagination though. Our video Powers That Be have recently updated the anti-piracy trailers they attach to everything. It shows the text "You wouldn't steal a _______" which is then followed by someone stealing said item. When it gets to "You wouldn't steal a movie" it shows someone taking a DVD from the video store. At this point, I get a rather more ambitious mental image, and think of someone sneaking into the projector rooms at the cinema and stealing the big rolls of film. Also of a party and someone saying "Yes I would!" to each of the "You wouldn't steal a"s.
