Whee fun - the lovely souls who started the bushfires have started up again, new fires in the hills some 5km across, the worst in decades; and the city is smothered in an even worse pall of smoke than before. This morning coming up the freeway it was like fog, we just couldn't see the other side of the river at all. It's actually worse in the city proper than in the suburbs - as the bus pulled into the main city station, my eyes started feeling kinda gritty. It's meant to be clearing up about now (lunchtime) but it's actually been getting worse the last couple of hours. Even inside our airconditioned building we're feeling the effects, and the sunlight is now just murky yellow, both outside in the courtyard, and in the higher ceilinged wings of the building (the library shelves are under one of these voids).
I'll scan the editorial cartoon from Monday's West later - this was after the weekend fires, and these are much worse, even from down here in the city, many kilometres from the actual seat of the blaze. A couple of workmates have commented on the bushfire moons too... at night when they've been able to see the moon, it's been red - according to one, poppy red.

Date: 2005-01-19 11:50 am (UTC)I'm a pretty tolerant person, but these people just infuriate and disgust me. So much that I can't actually describe it. To wilfully cause such damage on so large a scale...it simply beggars belief.

Date: 2005-01-19 12:27 pm (UTC)My imagination might be running away with me, but the thought of these people just sitting back and laughing as the fires burn, kilometres of bush, houses, and all destroyed, people hospitalised not just from the fire but the smoke all over the city... gah!
