Rant about how you've become addicted to buying comics, the ones you now buy because of someone getting you interested, and just how much it costs you. :D

Okidokie. I've been a comic buyer for nigh on... 13 years now - since I noticed DC's ol' Star Trek and TNG lines in A&R, and remembered a few weeks later there was actually a comic shop down by the EntCent. My collection was mainly Treks and other shows, never got into the mainstream hero ones (back then I was broke, and seeing all these books with stories that wound from one title to the next, no way could I afford to keep up). Anyway, these were pretty much long gone (with the exception of Avatar's new SG1 line, but me and Stargate comics is another story) and a couple of magazines.

Anyways, in late July last year, I was talking to someone who shall remain "the fantastic and wonderful Katzchen" for reasons of anonymity (happy K? :D) as normal (we often talk). At this time, I was in my slump, and K was just getting back into one of her old fandoms, X-Men, and wanted to share the joy. Enter me, trying to keep up with who's who, until in early August K introduces me to a Live Journal community called "scans_daily" with some scans from the latest issue of Astonishing X-Men. I read, I decide to mosey on down to the comic store and see if I can get this.

There ought to be a health warning on those shops - "warning, comics buying can be addictive!"

K shoulda known about my addictive personality. ;)

So, I bought, I liked, I decided to check out a few more, saw some from the other titles in newsagent and I'm now reading 8 titles regularly, along with another I'm thinking of adding to my list, the miniserieses that I pick up... and since I need to make this into a more ranty rant... it's all your fault, Katzchen! And you didn't even keep up with me on all the titles :P

That is the how.

As for how much it's cost me: what with the large number of trade paperbacks (approx $30-$40ea), comic issues (averaging at $5.20 for the sake of calculation) and others bought secondhand, or old old ones somewhat costlier: I have spent approximately AU$1400 on X-Men comics! - less about a hundred and fifty bucks in discounts from the store. And there's more about to be more ordered from this month's Previews...

Also in addition to that, there's another $180ish on trade paperbacks I wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't reading Previews more carefully these days (eg Fray, the Gold Key Star Trek collection), and a couple of DCU ones. But so not gonna get into those as much as XM. I'd need a forklift to get all me comics home.

I included this since there seems to be a wizarding meme going around... mine seems different though...
Put that in your herring and smoke it!
You are The Bursar.
You are generally seen as a fruitcake, but have
been known to show keen insight... on special
occasions. Put that in your herring and smoke
it.

You are the Chair of Indefinite Studies.
You are quite lazy and do very little to advance
the plot of the story. We're not quite certain
why you're here.

You call that a rant? You only used three exclamation points in the whole thing!

You are Ponder Stibbons.
Often ignored and very intelligent, you like to
study things and find interest in the
scientific. As a child, you probably had hours
of fun playing with boring things in boxes that
read 'hours of fun' on the lid.

Wonderful rant, Sean. :D

You are the Great WIZZARD himself.
You are Rincewind (first name forgotten).
The only reason you are a wizard is because it says
so (quite badly) on your hat. You are an abject
coward and solve problems by running in the
opposite direction. It's not that you can't
stand blood... It's just the sight of your own
which is so undesirable.
